Pokemon Heart of Gold and Soul of Silver Confirmed

Pokemon gold and Silver

The official Japanese Pokémon site has recently confirmed what I, among other people, have predicted. No, not DawnSilver, and DuskGold, once again my guess for the next game’s title was wrong. But, yes that’s right, Nintendo is remaking Pokémon Gold and Silver for the Nintendo DS, they are calling the two titles Pokémon Heart of Gold and Pokémon Soul of Silver. They will be released in Japan later this year(the 10th anniversary of their original Pokémon Gold and Silver), no release date has been set in North America, but everyone is sure that it will come stateside. No other information has really been released, but if you look at what ninendo did to Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, you can assume that Nintendo will add features from the current generation to the remakes. If any other news comes up, I’ll be sure to report them to you, so check back later.

Catch-up

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Well, let us begin the catch-ups so be can go to business as usual as soon as possible. First off, on a personal note, the Mario carving sold, but the Yoshi chainsaw carving sold is still up for grabs. In late November, I also got an Xbox 360, bundled with Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. I also recent bought Call of Duty: World at War.

dsi.jpg

Nintendo announced the release of the DSi. The new system is 12 percent thinner than the DS lite and the GBA slot is now gone. The new system will have an external 3 megapixel camera, as well as a front-facing camera, an SD slot, internal storage, and a DSi Shop(like the Wii Shop channel for the DS). The system was released in Japan on November 1, 2008, and will be released in North America in Spring of 2009.

Rather than Wii points, the DS and Wii will now have Nintendo Points. Once you buy the new points, you will have to chose whether you will use all the points for the DS shop system of the Wii Shop system; you will not be able to split the points between the new systems. The DSi will be somewhat, if not completely region locked.

Now on to homebrew, many new updates to thwart home brewers where released, but the home brewers found work arounds. The Wii Homebrew Channel turned 1.0. The DSi render all the old hombrew cards useless, but it appears that one new card, called Acekard 2i, will work on it.

Some big games that where released during Game Influence down time include: Call of Duty: World at War, Animal Crossing: City Folk(with the Wii Speak peripheral), de Blob, Wario Land: Shake It!, Guitar Hero World Tour, Chrono Trigger, Spore, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, the re-franchised Prince of Persia, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. A personal favorite, Wrath of the Lich King, was released in November, My girlfriend gave me this for my birthday, if you think about it, it’s quite ironic.

MegaMan9PromoArt.JPG

Not much in terms of digital releases, although Mega Man 9 was released for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3World of Goo was also released as a Wii Ware title.

Some big games that where announced or gained a greater popularity with a future release during Game Influence’s down time include: No More Heroes 2, Resident Evil 5, Sin & Punishment 2, Sega’s The Conduit, Killzone 2, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and games from the Wii remake program. The Wii remake program will release games from the Game Cube to the Wii, with updated controls. Games in the Wii remake program include Metroid Prime 1, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Pikmin, Mario Tennis, Chibi Robo, and Pikmin 2.

Club_Nintendo.bmp

Recently, Nintendo finally provided American with a service that Europe and Japan have had for quite some time, Club Nintendo. Club Nintendo launched December 15. Before the service’s launch, Nintendo confirmed that Club Nintendo allowed users to earn Coins for registering Nintendo products and completing surveys, redeem Coins for limited edition Rewards, earn a set amount of Coins each year to gain Gold and Platinum status, create a Family Account and invite members of your family to join, and register your newly purchased Wii console or Nintendo DS on Club Nintendo and extend your warranty.

Well, I’m sure I missed a lot of news, If I remember anything I missed, I’ll try to bring it up laiter.

Yoshi and Mario Chainsaw Carvings

I almost forgot to post this. When I say that I’m too busy with work to post on Game Influence, that means that I’m either lying or that means that I’m carving. I made a Yoshi and a Mario. I carved the Yoshi before the Mario. The carvings are stained, not painted. So you can see the grain and the color wont chip off like it would if it was covered with paint. I finish carving each character within 5-6 hours, and the staining process took about an hour each. I’ve only put two coats of sealer (Spar Urethane made by Minwax) on the two carvings. I would put another coat on it before I sell them; ask me, by the way, if your interested in buying one of them.

I’m might make a huge Mario carving, but outside of that, I don’t have any ideas on what video game charicters I should carve next. What character do you think should be my next video game carving?

Pokémon Game Nomenclature

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

280px-English_Pokémon_logo.svg copy.gif

It was recently announced that the next “true” Pokémon game would be called “Pokémon Platinum”. I use the term “true” because I think that some other games might come before the release of Pokémon Platinum, that aren’t a part of the main series, like the Pokémon dungeon franchise or something like another racing or pinball game.

I can’t help but think that naming the new game “Pokémon Platinum” was a bad choice by Nintendo/Game Freak, because Opal or Girasol would fit the game so much better, for so much obvious reasons. Not only that but it’s also creating problems down the road, specifically where the Pokémon Game Nomenclature goes. So, where will Nintendo/Game freak go from here? There are not much more materials that strike the same powerful impact of Platinum.

One thing to consider is that the name of a game must be understood in America and Japan. Now this part in crucial, All the Pokémon games since Pokémon Crystal, have had the version name written in Katakana, Japanese foreign characters, so they sound the same, or close enough to same, as the English equivalent, not only that, the version name is understood by a large amount of Japanese readers. For future titles, especially with the introduction of Nintendo’s worldwide Wi-Fi system, the names must be both the same in America and Japan and understood by both peoples.

With the exception of the Classic remakes, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, The third and fourth generation Pokémon games have been named after birthstones. So far the birthstones that have been used for identification Pokémon games are diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, and sapphire. The birthstones that remain unused are, garnet, amethyst, bloodstone/aquamarine, topaz, sardonyx, turquoise/zircon, and opal (what Platinum should have been called). The words Amethyst (ameshisuto) aquamarine (akuamarin) garnet (ga−netto) sardonyx (sa−donikkusu) turquoise : toruko zirconium (jirukoniumu) opal (opa−ru) are words that are mostly understood, if not the only word used to identify the stone. As far as I know the birthstone Topaz doesn’t have a popular Katakana English equivalent, so I don’t think Topaz will ever be used for a Pokémon game.

Pt.jpg

Since platinum isn’t a birthstone, the future names of Pokémon games might take another path. So what are the possibilities for future names? First, they of coarse could go back to birthstones. Second, they, they could continue in the path that Platinum is going, by naming games after different periodic elements, Such as uranium (only known as uranium in Japan), or plutonium (only known as purutoniumu). But, those are things that don’t seem really Pokémonesque. I think if they continue in a path by taking the game’s name from periodic elements, they would name the game after metals or metalloids, such as Iron (airon or aian), or Nickel (nikkeru), Bronze (buronzu). Steel (suchi−ru) could also pass as a name for a Pokémon game. Nintendo/Game Freak could go into trade goods such as silk (shiruku), cotton (kotton) for naming the games. Or they can go into what I call “living stones”, with things like ivory (aibori−) or coral (ko−raru).
They could also go into ancient elements such as earth(a−su), wind (uindo), fire (faia), air(ea−), and aether, however aether doesn’t have a real bases in japanese ancient elements. Expanding that line of thought, games could be named after some of the element’s corresponding to Pokémon types such as electricity (erekiteru) or spirit (supiritto). They could go to other things like mist (misuto) or ice (aisu).

Nintendo/Game Freak could also go back to the first generations system of naming games after colors. Black and white could definitely be released as a Red/Blue/Green, Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, or Diamond/Pearl type of set. Some other colors that have yet to be used are indigo (injigo), and Violet (baioretto).

They could also go into a drastically different path, by not naming the game after elements/materials relating to the game’s respective mascot. They could release a set of games taking place in different regions, and name the game after the particular region in which the game takes place. Or the different games could start of in different towns in the same region, and the game could take the player’s hometown’s name.

I’m pretty sure that sulfur, brown, topaz, coal, brimstone, smoke, and charcoal don’t have popular katakana equivalents. Copper doesn’t have a popular Katakana word. An orange is called an “orenji” but I don’t know if that goes along with the color itself. So I wouldn’t put much confidence in someone who says that those could be used for a Pokémon game.

Only time will tell what the “true” Pokémon games will be called for Nintendo’s next portable system or for the Nintendo DS late in it lifespan. My guess, based on the naming of Pokémon Platinum, is that they will do a few more Minerals/Stones without much thought put into correlating the name of the game to its respective mascot. Until they hammer out one theme for naming the Pokémon games.

Donkey Kong for the Wii?

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

dkwii.jpg

Donkey Kong, along with other Nintendo franchises (Kirby, and maybe Yoshi), hasn’t seen a “true” release in a long time. In recent years Donkey Kong’s home console games have been limited to drumming games. Portable games have been limited to simple games where the only thing that Donkey Kong can do is swing from 2d vine to another 2d vine or limited to merely being a victim of the Mini-Marios.

During the SNES era, Rare, the company now owned by Microsoft, made 3 Donkey Kong games, Donkey Kong County, Donkey Kong Country 2 – Diddy’s Kong Quest, and Donkey Kong Country – Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble. These three games were some of the best games made for the Super Nintendo.

During the N64 era, Rare’s Donkey Kong 64, was the first game to use the N64’s expansion. The game was the first game to show off what the expansion pack could do and it was the first game to truly bring Donkey Kong into the third dimension.

Kirby’s last big game for a console, Kirby’s Air Raid, was also a big diversion from the main franchise. Now Nintendo, you have to remember that if you bring a franchise away from the main series, you have to bring it back. Donkey Kong and Kirby haven’t seen a “true to the franchise” game for a home console since the Nintendo 64 era, although the Kirby experience has continued on Nintendo’s portable consoles.

Does Nintendo not release these games, because of the painful memory of their lost company, Rare, who made these games? I don’t think that’s the case, because Microsoft (the owner or Rare) has supported Nintendo’s portable console. If for some reason Nintendo doesn’t want to pursue a 3D Donkey Kong game for the Wii, I would still love to see a 3d Donkey Kong game, so I would love to see Rare do what they did for Diddy Kong Racing DS and release Donkey Kong 64 on the Nintendo DS.

So, I think it’s time to bring back a 3d Donkey Kong for Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii. Why, because there is no reason Nintendo shouldn’t make another 3d Game for the lovable Nintendo character. I’d say the game should be cell shaded, when I think of Donkey Kong, I think of him as a cartoon, even more so that Mario or Zelda. But, either way, Donkey Kong on the Wii would be an enjoyable graphical experience, because outside of Brawl we’ve never seen a highly defined Donkey Kong franchise character or DK environment. When Super Mario galaxy came out, and people saw Bowser’s hair waving in the air, they had one of those “WOW!” moments. I think having Donkey Kong on the Wii would offer something similar, because no one has seen a Donkey Kong that was using the Wii’s graphical abilities. I for one would love to see DK in a lush environment, with hair that looks like hair and not a series of monkey shaped polygons, with buildings that don’t pop up when come close to then and disappear when walking away from them and Icons where you can see the edges of the pixels.

What would be the story? Well they would just what they do with all Nintendo Franchises, by repeating themselves, like Mario saving the princess, Link saving Zelda, and Donkey Kong finding the Golden Banana’s for some reason.

Outside of bring the game back to its roots, I think DK fans would enjoy a Vine swinging game, similar to what NiGHTS 2 had to offer in its flying dynamic, but in a more flat environment, and with more vertical path’s. If that would stand as a game itself, I would love to see it added as a feature to a 3d Donkey Kong game for the Wii.

Either way, if Nintendo keeps releasing these gimmicky games feature these icons with out releasing titles true to their respective franchises these franchises will loose their identity.

Pokémon Platinum?

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

platinum.jpgAlthough it could be a hoax, It appears that the next true Pokémon title could be called Pokémon Platinum rather than Pokémon Opal.None of this stuff is actual confirmed, but it all seems legit. Apparently a scan has serfaced of the upcoming issue of CoroCoro. But some of my previous predictions may be true, It appears that Giratina will be in another form, some calling it the “Origin Form”. Some other rumors are coming in but I’m going to wait to post them along with my opinions until we get some better confirmations.

Remakes and Ports for the DS

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

With the upcoming release of Myst DS (May 13) I started to think about other classic PC games I’d love to see remade or ported on the DS like Myst has been. There are so many great point-and-click adventure games that would fit perfectly on the DS with the touch screen interface. The 90s were all about adventure gaming for me and its time they made a comeback.

King’s Quest
Sierra was a videogame giant in it’s time and it pushed out eight games in this series from 1984 to 1998. This is a classic title and King’s Quest IV would make a perfect DS game.

The 7th Guest
Published by Virgin Games in 1992, this horror-based adventure game was groundbreaking for its time, using live action video clips for much of its gameplay. It features static room to room movement with a puzzle-based system of play. In the end this game is a classic and many would love to see it brought back.

More Myst?
There are 5 core games in the Myst series with many re-releases over the years. The second in the series is called Riven. Will we be seeing it on the DS in the not-too-distant future?

Guitar Hero DS: On Tour

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

It was recently announced that the Guitar Hero franchise will be shedding it’s way to Nintendo’s latest mobile console, with Guitar Hero DS: On Tour.

ghds.jpg

So you may be asking your self, How the Hell could you play Guitar Hero on your Nintendo DS? Well the key is the newly announced peripheral seen below. After 20 prototype “guitars” were created and tested the peripheral version you see below proved to be the most practical. The peripheral is inserted into the Game Boy expansion port in the bottom of the DS. The peripheral only contains four frets, as opposed to the standard five frets found in the other games in the franchise. Players also their hand through the Guitar Grip’s strap so they don’t drop the system when they’re rocking out, and it puts the DS in the vertical position. The picking however feels more like a “the real thing”. you actual the touch screen and a stylus pick (which is stored in the peripheral) to emulate plucking the strings.

guitar-hero-ds-peripheral.jpg

The Nintendo DS’s internal Microphone is also expected to come into play. No official release date has been given, but you can expect the game to be released in the summer of 2008. The game will feature over 20 licensed songs, several two-player modes, and Guitar Hero’s “Star Power”. Below is a commercial for the upcoming game.

Nintendo Pay And Play(Greed or MMORPGs)

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

wifi
Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection has always been free to use on the Wii and Nintendo DS. But it now sounds like Nintendo will be charging people to play online for some games. “Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play” is what they’re calling it. To avoid mix-ups, Nintendo will replace the blue Nintendo Wi-Fi Logo with a red “Pay And Play” Logo.

Now either Nintendo is planning for support for MMORPGs (which would justify a Nintendo needing money to support the large servers required) or Nintendo is getting greedy. I will not be paying for Online Games on the Wii, unless they charge like 2 points a month. How about you?

Professor Layton a Broken Game?

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

PL

February 11, 2008 was the day Level 5’s Professor Layton and the Curious Village came out in the US. Since then, people that have bought this game have been having issues. The same issue has been occurring, you try to download the new puzzle Level 5 and Nintendo put out every week, and at half-way you get disconnected. Of course, in the Nintendo Tech Support Forums people were asking and telling the same exact thing, and thats when it was found out that it was not a problem with specific people, but with the game. Fortunately, this should be fixed, as an administrator over at the forum said he would look into it.

Hello, and thank you for reporting this. We are looking into the situation and will post a reply here when we know more.

Thanks!

SUDA Wants to Create Adult Mario Title

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Mario Holding Gun

Grasshopper’s Goichi Suda is known for creating very adult-themed games, like Killer 7 and No More Heroes. At an interview with Nintendo Official Magazine UK, he was asked if you had ever wanted to create a title meant for the younger crowd. He looked up and said the following.

“I want to make a Super Mario game for adults…Maybe Mario could wear an Italian suit and have a machine gun…But Nintendo probably wouldn’t like that idea.”

Spore In September

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Yesterday, Electronic Arts Inc. and Maxis announced that Spore would be hitting the shelves some time in September. The first release will include the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS, and mobile versions of the game.

The Wii version is in in the design stage right now, and will not come at the same time of PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS, and mobile version’s release. Right now the developers are mainly concerned with the “core version”, and the Wii version is not their top priority.

Spore_DS_Creature1.jpg  Spore_DS_Creature2.jpg  Spore_DS_Combat.jpg  Spore_DS_DigSuccess.jpg  Spore_DS_LegBrowser.jpg  Spore_DS_SpeciesGuide.jpg

The DS and mobile version of the game will be called Spore Creatures
When asked about the Nintendo DS version of the game, Spore Executive Producer, Lucy Bradshaw said “DS players will be able to share stuff with DS players via local network and Wi-Fi.” The PC and Mac versions of the game are like five games in one, the Nintendo DS version of the game focuses on the “Creature” portion of the main game, hence why it’s called Spore Creatures.

The Nintendo DS version of the game will also encompass the core aspects of what Spore is about Creativity, Exploration, and Evolution. The Nintendo DS version will also include more of a quest than its PC counterpart

The North American release is set to be during the weekend of September 7. The European release date of PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS, and Mobile versions of the game is currently set at September 5th.
