Catch-up

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Well, let us begin the catch-ups so be can go to business as usual as soon as possible. First off, on a personal note, the Mario carving sold, but the Yoshi chainsaw carving sold is still up for grabs. In late November, I also got an Xbox 360, bundled with Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. I also recent bought Call of Duty: World at War.

dsi.jpg

Nintendo announced the release of the DSi. The new system is 12 percent thinner than the DS lite and the GBA slot is now gone. The new system will have an external 3 megapixel camera, as well as a front-facing camera, an SD slot, internal storage, and a DSi Shop(like the Wii Shop channel for the DS). The system was released in Japan on November 1, 2008, and will be released in North America in Spring of 2009.

Rather than Wii points, the DS and Wii will now have Nintendo Points. Once you buy the new points, you will have to chose whether you will use all the points for the DS shop system of the Wii Shop system; you will not be able to split the points between the new systems. The DSi will be somewhat, if not completely region locked.

Now on to homebrew, many new updates to thwart home brewers where released, but the home brewers found work arounds. The Wii Homebrew Channel turned 1.0. The DSi render all the old hombrew cards useless, but it appears that one new card, called Acekard 2i, will work on it.

Some big games that where released during Game Influence down time include: Call of Duty: World at War, Animal Crossing: City Folk(with the Wii Speak peripheral), de Blob, Wario Land: Shake It!, Guitar Hero World Tour, Chrono Trigger, Spore, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, the re-franchised Prince of Persia, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. A personal favorite, Wrath of the Lich King, was released in November, My girlfriend gave me this for my birthday, if you think about it, it’s quite ironic.

MegaMan9PromoArt.JPG

Not much in terms of digital releases, although Mega Man 9 was released for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3World of Goo was also released as a Wii Ware title.

Some big games that where announced or gained a greater popularity with a future release during Game Influence’s down time include: No More Heroes 2, Resident Evil 5, Sin & Punishment 2, Sega’s The Conduit, Killzone 2, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and games from the Wii remake program. The Wii remake program will release games from the Game Cube to the Wii, with updated controls. Games in the Wii remake program include Metroid Prime 1, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Pikmin, Mario Tennis, Chibi Robo, and Pikmin 2.

Club_Nintendo.bmp

Recently, Nintendo finally provided American with a service that Europe and Japan have had for quite some time, Club Nintendo. Club Nintendo launched December 15. Before the service’s launch, Nintendo confirmed that Club Nintendo allowed users to earn Coins for registering Nintendo products and completing surveys, redeem Coins for limited edition Rewards, earn a set amount of Coins each year to gain Gold and Platinum status, create a Family Account and invite members of your family to join, and register your newly purchased Wii console or Nintendo DS on Club Nintendo and extend your warranty.

Well, I’m sure I missed a lot of news, If I remember anything I missed, I’ll try to bring it up laiter.

Check Mii Out Updated

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Checkmeout.jpg

Today we were greeted in the morning with that wonderful blue light. What was the blue light for? Well the Check Mii Out Channel was updated.

You can now find all the Miis you’ve posted in the Posting Plaza, view
l Miis posted by that Artisan in their profile, return to judge a contest that was canceled, and use parental controls. You can now view 500 of the most popular Miis when using the Posting Plaza’s “Popular” category. And there is probably a few other goodies.

To download the new update for the channel, you must go to the Wii Ware section in the Shop Channel, a click on “Check Mii Out”.

Japan Gets Snowmen While the Rest of the World Get Clouds

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

I noticed this when I first downloaded the Forecast Channel, one very bizarre aspect of the Wii’s Forecast Channel is the Icons used to display a general description of the weather. Looking at places like the United States, you see some dull icons, you know the standard graphical cloud maybe with rain or snow on it, but if you get the information for cities in Japan, you get “fun” icons, like umbrellas, cartoon clouds, the Japanese style sun, and even a a cute little snowman. My question is, “why can’t we have the cute little snowman?”

Picture 24.jpg      Picture 26.jpg

Picture 28.jpg      Picture 30.jpg

I was trying to find the weather for were my sister lives, dsfdfgdfgsdf, I was surprised to find only one location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was shown in the Wii’s Forcast Channel, population of more than 300,000. Easter Island, with a population of only less than 4,000, weather is shown. Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a population of more than 300,000. Now in areas of high population, like New York, you see clusters of information, you see the weather for areas just a few miles from each other. Someone who lives in these areas doesn’t need that much accuracy, don’t you think it would be a little more helpful to put Doesn’t that seem a little unhelpful, wouldn’t it make more sense to put a weather report in an area located 100s of miles from another report than to put in next to one thats 2 miles closer than another.

Picture 23.jpg    Picture 22.jpg    Picture 31.jpg

Another weird thing about the Forecast Channel involves it’s rotation of the 3D globe, well not weird, will just unnecessary. The rotation of the globe doesn’t allow you to pass through the south poll, tho it’s not a big deal, almost not worth mentioning but it would be slightly more fun spinning the globe with no restrictions.

Wii Voice Chat Could Be Comming

Friday, December 14th, 2007

voicewii.jpg

Could we see Voice Chat on Nintendo Wi-Fi games? Talk of the Wii’s capability in terms of audio input has been talked about many times, including talks of hidden microphone support already included in the Wii’s software, the Wii-motes built in Audio Translator and Text-to-Speech applications. But today talk of the Wii allowing Voice Chat on online Wii games came up in the same interview talking about the Wii’s “Rain Checks”.

Our system has the capability for online voice chat, what it comes down to is finalizing the peripheral… I would not be surprised to see that capability come to this system.

It is possible, Could we see a VOIP Channel? You know to call your friends up and ask them for a game? One can only dream.

New Wii Channel Gives Nintendo Fans What They Want, in Japan

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

To the surprise of Japanese Wii owners, Nintendo has release a new channel which translates to Everybody’s Nintendo Channel. The new channel offers things that many Nintendo fans have been asking for. First of all the channel offers footage of upcoming and released games.

The new channel also offers the ability to transfer a free downloaded Nintendo DS demos, and other forms of news and what have you. No word on when this channel will be offered in the United States and Europe, it is most likely that the channel will come without any notice before its release.

Below is a video I found on YouTube that shows off this new Channel.

Wii Gift Exchanging Feature

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

I forgot to post this, along time ago. Nintendo is adding the capability for people to send your friends Virtual console games. First you go to the Shop Channel, then you select the title you want to send to your buddy. Click to send to your friend, you can also enter a message to go along with the gift. After that your friend will get the message, in a special envelope. I think this might use a special blue light pattern, like the ones I talked about long ago. At this point your friend should push “initiate” icon to activate the Wii Shopping Channel. Then they should choose to download the present, to start to download. Below is a video that illustrates the new Gift Exchanging Feature.

N64 DD on the Virtual Console?

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

64ddlarge.jpg
I just got to thinking, will we ever see the N64 DD games on the Wii’s Virtual Console? “What’s the DD?” you may ask yourself. Well the DD is a hardware expantion for the N64, that allowed the system to play a disc made
fzeroxek.jpg

First up, the F-Zero X Expansion Kit is awesome. Twelve new tracks were included with this add-on with the addition of surround sound, track editor, and Machine creator. F-Zero X, was already released on the Virtual console, so I’m not sure how the expansion would be implemented.

5287.jpg

Kyojin no Doshin 1 and it’s respective expansion, Kyojin no Doshin Kaihou Sensen Chibikko Chikko Daishuugou is the much like Dōbutsu no Mori,Animal Crossing’s N64 version made before the GameCube version, in that it was only release on the N64 in Japan, in favor of the N64 Version. Kyojin no Doshin 1 and it’s expansion is, off coarse, the N64 version of Kyojin no Doshin, or Doshin the Giant. Doshin the Giant has only made it to Japan and Europe. The Gamecube Version never made it to America, due to legal issues, legal issues that I don’t belive apply to the N64 version.

japanprogolf64_ddjpboxboxart_160w.jpg

Japan Pro Golf Tour 64 and SimCity 64 were also released on the DD, but they aren’t anything to talk about.

Next were four programs(not games) under the name Mario Artist were released. First Paint Studio was a paint program. It was basically Super Mario Artist: Mario Paint. Second, Mario Artist: Polygon Studio is a 3D computer graphics editor that lets the user design and render 3D polygon images.
The program allowed you to record a VCR’s and camcorder’s movies on the N64. Third, Mario Artist: Talent Studio is a simple animation production studio which lets the user insert captured images such as human faces onto 3D models and then animate the models. All three programs used a bundled Nintendo 64 Capture Cartridge, but it’s not really necessary for the application to work. Finally, the Mario Artist: Communication Kit allowed users to connect to Randnet’s “Net Studio” where you could share Paint/Talent/Polygon Studio creations with other members. Contests and printing services were also available. Now the other three games could be put on the Wii Shop Channel, this however could not, but a Wii channel could offer this, but I really don’t see a need for that, it would be too much work for Nintendo. Below is a video, In Japanese of coarse, that explains the DD and these programs.

I really hope we see this programs and games on the VC. Most Nintendo Fanboys have never heard of the N64 DD, it is an opportunity for Nintendo to say to Americans, “Looks what we did, that you never had a chance to see because it failed, until now”. But still, a lot of what’s offered in the DD’s Apps are already offered in the Wii, but I would love to see a Polygon maker, and Video editor. The DD offered Kyojin no Doshin 1, F-Zero X Expansion Kit, Japan Pro Golf Tour 64, and SimCity 64 would be a nice addition to the Wii. It’s also possible that other games were developed and finished for the DD, but just were finished after the DD was discontinued. I hope Nintendo takes this opportunity and runs with it.

Animal Crossing Wii will be a MMO? A Flash Cart?

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

This news is kind of old, but it’s important nonetheless. Some websites are reporting that Animal Crossing will be a social networking massive multiplayer online game. Although I’m having trouble believing that to be true. Animal Crossing is a game that is built for more younger audience then those MMOs built on an other systems. I really find it hard to believe that Nintendo would allow a massive multiplayer online game focused towards kids, beef maintains focus being towards kids would most likely use a friend code system, thus make no longer making it a social networking experience.

“A Japanese source has confirmed to Edge that the upcoming Wii iteration of Animal Crossing is set to be a social networking MMO.”

Animal Crossing for the GameCube offered well over a dozen of the games that cost five dollars each on the Virtual Console. The Animal Crossing for the Wii could not offer this, because Nintendo would, of course, lose money. So what are they planning to do? It’s being reported that an official DS flash card might come bundled with a game. That means we can see games like Super Mario Land, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and Metroid II. Sounds good, ehh?

Of similar import is the imminent arrival of an official DS flash card, which will initially just be available to allow Nintendo to sell the back catalogue of Game Boy and Game Boy Colour games.

Colour, catalogue? Stupid British!

SSBB: Target Smash and Videos

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Today the DOJO was updated with information on target practice. That’s right, target practices returns once again to the Super Smash Bros. franchise, but now it’s bigger and better than ever. You still have to break 10 targets in a set amount of time, but now speed runners get a new helping of speed running goodness. The mini game has five stages, and five levels of difficulty, making a total of 25 possible ways to play. The stages also take place outside, unlike in previous games of the franchise.

Sakurai also state something that “appears to sound like” a reverse double negative; “There is another announcement I’d like make simultaneously.” What’s his announcement? Willie says that these three minute speech runs can be recorded, and the recording can be sent through Nintendo’s 24 connect service. Personally I believe that that should’ve been the title of the entry, rather than “target smash”.
